My Little Corner

This is where I try to work - or one of the places I try to work. (Don't you think P.S. Haven's print would look good on the wall?) Just a little corner in our bedroom. Yeah, it's cluttered, and sometimes that might not be good because it can be distracting. But I'm a cluttered person. Nothing simple or easy about me. And even though I may enjoy a clean, zen-like environment from time to time, I like messy. It's more interesting. Maybe because nature is messy. Just take a walk in the woods.

This is where I'm gonna build myself a little writing cabin - on our land up in Maine. It'll sit where that downed tree is in the middle of the photo. It'll be small, not much larger than a good-sized tent, no power or plumbing. I've been thinking I want to do a living roof. Timber frame. Cordwood walls. A covered porch to sit and look down at this hemlock tree that I've named the "Embrace Tree" because there's a second trunk curling around the main one. I'm designing it. I want to build it myself. Oh, I'll accept help, but I want to do as much of the work myself as I can. It will be my retreat. It's a little ways from our house site, far enough, but not too far. My hope is to get most of it done this summer and fall, but the way things have been going...

I love both your corners -- the existing one and the other, still in your head. I like your beads. Were you one of those Girls Gone Wild in Nawlins? ;-)

The cabin sounds wonderful! Another idea, though perhaps not very practical, and maybe too distracting, would be to build the cabin around the "Embrace Tree."

I hope you'll post pictures of construction-in-progress!

Thanks EllaRegina.

No, I've never been to Nawlins. But they are real beads. Mr. E had business down there years ago and one of the folks gave him a bunch of beads to take home (we had younger kids then).

I had thought about that (building the cabin around the tree), but then realized I wouldn't be able to gaze at it the same way. Oh, I will post pictures!

We (Mr. E and I) have plans/dreams of holding workshops up there - him woodworking, etc. and me writing (including erotica). One of these days, one of these days....

You have a cozy-looking writing space. That's the best kind. And what a gorgeous place to build a cabin!

Yes, I do think a Haven print would look superb in that corner!
Seriously, I wish my work space was that accessible. There is a small, winding pathway cut to mine. It's like a canyon, with the walls formed by old comic books and CDs and DVDs and toys....

What a lovely space, Robin! I'm a bit envious - my space is my wingback in the living room...but I guess as long as I write, right?

I love the sound of your future space, and the fact that you want to build it yourself. A woman after my own heart, though here, I think it would have to be strawbale instead of cordwood *grin*

Definitely will be looking forward to pictures!!

The site in Maine looks beautiful! Isn't it wonderful to have dreams like that? I think it's cool that you want to saw wood, drive nails, and hang windows yourself. Can I reserve a spot now for your first writer's retreat?

cerulean, you most certainly can reserve a spot - just don't hold your breath - hehe - unless you really like "primitive"

Kirsten - hi! Yeah, when I start feeling down or worried about stuff, I just look at pictures of "my" land and know that's really "home"

Primitive is fine. It removes modern distractions that can sometimes get in the way of writing.

That's why I get up early to write. Although I turned one of my son's bedrooms into a library/study/writing area, I generally sit on a comfy loveseat in the living room in front of a huge window that looks out onto my wooded backyard and garden. Right now, the trees are sprouting lime green leaves and the crap apple blossoms are dripping pink from the rain soaked branches.

My Macbook and I travel everywhere together, but this quiet time in the morning, listening and looking at the nature that surrounds us is my favorite time.

Okay, so I've just humanized my computer in that last paragraph but it's true--it's my best friend most times.
